David Edgar was born in 1987 in Kitchener, Ontario. At elementary school, he excelled in many sports including hockey and running. At age 9, David competed in an open tournament in England where he was offered a scholarship by Manchester United Football Club. He chose to stay in Canada, and from age 11, he started to play at the provincial level. Shortly after, he signed with FC London of the Canadian Soccer League.
David’s international career began in 2001, at age 14, when he left Canada to accept a scholarship with Newcastle United academy. He made his first club team appearance in the 2006-07 Premier League for Newcastle against Bolton Wanderers. At his home debut match, he scored his first Premier League Goal against Manchester United in a 2-2 draw. David Edgar was later named Man of the Match and drew praise from his Newcastle manager for his game performance, especially noting his effective defence against Christiano Ronaldo. From 2005 through 2016, David played for six different clubs on loan or traded in England.
In 2016, David returned to Canada to play for the Vancouver Whitecaps, and in 2019-2020 he played his last games as a professional player with Hamilton’s Forge FC. The 2019 season was the inauguration of the Canadian Premier League, Canada’s top level of professional soccer. David helped Forge FC finish second overall and qualify for the finals of that 2019 inaugural season. The team won 2-0 over two contests against Calgary’s Cavalry FC, and captured the championship. In 2020, he played 10 of 11 games before retiring. In April 2021, David rejoined Forge FC as the Hamilton club’s assistant coach.
David’s national Canada Soccer team career includes appearances in Canada U17 in 2003, Canada U20 from 2003 through 2008, and the Men’s National Team from 2011 through 2019.
David’s outstanding achievements as a player include Canadian Youth Player of the Year, 2006, and being named one of six ambassadors for the Canadian team during competition in the U20 World Cup. In late 2011, he became a regular starter for the national team, and scored his first goal for Canada in the crucial World Cup qualification match against CUBA. Canada won 3-0. He wore the captain’s arm band for the first time in the opening game of the 2015 Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup competition.
David started DEFC (David Edgar Football Coaching), a high-quality soccer coaching club located in the Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo and Guelph regions. DEFC was launched to help nurture the growth and development of the next generation of players.
