Abraham Erb was one of the first settlers near what became the village of Waterloo. He cleared land south of Erb Streets in 1806 and eventually owned 900 acres. He built a sawmill in 1808, a distillery, and in 1816 a gristmill, the complex of which remained in operation until 1927. Abraham and Magdalena Erb had one child who died at the age of six years. They then adopted Barnabass Devett.
Erb deeded land for the first school built in 1820 in Waterloo and also left an endowment, the interest on which was used for school supplies.
Erb’s widow married Bishop Benjamin Eby.
